Starting an Essay

Starting an essay could be quite hard, especially for a beginner. Don’t worry! Even veterans face writer’s block. You need to concentrate on what you are writing. If you think, web is a big distraction, close your Facebook page and turn off Twitter. You can also depend on a pen and a paper instead of your system. Take a break; go to your garden or balcony. Take a stroll if it relaxes you. Come back and start writing fresh.

How to Start Writing an Essay

Topic selection is the first step. If you have been assigned a topic, then you are half done. You don’t have to go through the process of choosing a topic which interests the readers. If you have to choose the topic, think about the type of paper you are expected to produce. Should it be a general overview or a specific analysis? Choose a topic which you think is relevant to the current scenarios and which amuses the readers.

Document planning is an essential step to be taken to write a good essay. Your essay should have an introduction which states clearly your objective, and also a proper conclusion that ties up your theme. All the paragraphs should have a logical connection. Don’t beat around the bush. Make your writing crisp and sweet.

While writing the first draft of your essay, don’t worry about its structure or look and feel. Just jot down the main ideas that come to your mind. Rework on the points you have written. Rearrange the paragraphs to get a flow.

Save the introduction for the last. You might get a better idea on how to write the introduction once you are done with rest of the paragraphs. If possible, start your essay with a pithy quote. But you should be very careful in choosing a quote. An irrelevant quote can bring in a negative impression on the readers and also confuse them.

Another good way of starting your essay is by defining a key term in the topic. This gives the examiner an impression that you know what you are talking about and that you are not bluffing. You can effectively draw the readers into your essay by using an anecdote. It could be a brief story, or a parable or even a small episode from your own life. Anecdotes should be used depending on how formal or informal your essays are.

Posing questions in your essay also makes it catchy. While reading a statement in an essay, most of the readers just take it for granted what the writer says. But if you shoot a question, it makes them think. If you can do that, you are a successful writer. Your aim is to make the society think and grow wise.
